Stony Brook Level 1 Trauma Center: Caring for Suffolk County.
Suffolk County’s only Adult and Pediatric Level I Trauma Center has the people, technology and resources to handle everything from sports injuries to fires, and major road incidents.
Level I is the highest designation, indicating the most advanced care available, and 24/7 access to in-house (as opposed to on-call), board-certified critical care specialists and trauma surgeons.
Specialty consultation is available 24 hours a day in neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, and dental and maxillofacial surgery.
Our trauma surgeons specialize in surgery for all types of traumatic injuries, including penetrating trauma (gunshot/stab wounds, nail punctures) and blunt trauma (injuries from falls, motor vehicle collisions, sports), as well as for acute surgical disease involving the abdomen.
The victims of major burns receive highly specialized care in the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center at Stony Brook University Hospital. Its surgical and medical staff provide the most sophisticated care in a state-of-the-art facility to meet the special needs of patients with burns.
Stony Brook University Hospital has 20 operating rooms, plus CT scanners and MRI machines right in the Emergency Department, with ready access to blood products through its Blood Bank. For children, Stony Brook provides a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department adjacent to the main Emergency Department, staffed by board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians.
